Can I Freelance While Collecting Unemployment Insurance In California?
I know that my benefits will be reduced if I work part-time while collecting unemployment and that if was freelancing before and then don’t have any more work, I can’t collect. But, here is my situation, I was working full-time at a permanent position and did qualify for unemployment insurance. If I get some freelance work during the time of my claim, does this disqualify me, or just reduce my benefits?

It depends–state regulations vary. Generally, if the amount is below a threshold it doesn’t affect your benefits, or at least not much. The smart thing to do is to call the Ca Department of Labor info line and ask–the number is on the same website where you access your account for unemployment benefits.
And a tip: don’t tell them you “have” freelance work, just that you “may” have an opportunity for some. That way, some overzealous clerk won’t jump the gun and reduce your benefits prematurely. Be honest, but ell them what they need to know. And nothing else.
